The Landriana Gardens rise up on the city of Ardea, they take the shape of an amazing and natural complex of historical treasure. We can consider these Gardens more like a Palace with several rooms which all have a magnificent garden with various botanical charateristics.
In 1956 the Marquis Gallarati Scotti and his wife, Lavinia Taverna, purchased these 10 hectares of land, despite being devoid of vegetation at the time for the Anzio Landings in 2nd World War which had been a devastating period for this area.
Gardens’ Birth
The Landriana Gardens complex was created by Ms Taverna’s skillful hands and it was supervised by Russel Page, a famous landscape architect from Britain.
Page designed hedges and paths through different varieties of plants in order to create a geometrical harmony. He designed also a particular rose garden and a garden for collections which are “Il Giardino degli Aranci” and “Il Giardino degli Ulivi” we both know today. While the garden was expanding, they preferred soft colors and a particular pruning that creates symmetrical harmonies despite of bright colors and exotic plants, even if it was not so usual in a Mediterranean area.
“Giardino degli Ulivi”, “La Valle delle rose” and “Viale Bianco” are among the most beautiful gardens in Rome and they have the same kind of pruning.
Since the 80s the garden has been opened to the public with the gardening fair.
That’s how the “Nuovo Giardino Grigio”, the “Prato Blu” and the “Grande Prato Primavera ed Autunno alla Landriana” were born and they represent the perfect return of a Mediterranean’s typical sunny scenery.
It is an enchanted garden with harmonious colors, and of course, it is a source of inspiration to all the keen gardeners (beginners are welcome).
